Popular Frame Sizes And Type
Dunelm offers a wide range of photo frames in different sizes. Standard UK sizes are 6”x4", 7”x5", 10”x8", A4 and A3. Be aware that the number refers to the photo size that fits inside, not the outer frame and that you should always measure your photo before buying a frame. To help with finding the right size, our filters list sizes in inches and in cm for anyone more comfortable with the metric system. The most popular size is 6”x4”; step up to A4 or 10"x8" for something that works as proper wall art rather than a tabletop photo. We also offer a large range of multi photo frames which either come as a single frame with multiple photo cut-out openings within a mount, so multiple photos sit together in a frame; or they come as “collage” frames where a set of single frames are fixed together - the easiest way to display a set of memories without the effort of handing individual frames.
Do You Need A Mount?
A mount is the cardboard border that sits between the picture and frame. They help smaller prints stand out and give them a more considered, gallery-style feel. Some of our photo frames already come with a mount that you can choose to use or keep off. If you want to keep it, choose a frame that is slightly larger than your photo. The dimensions section on our product pages will give you further guidance around sizing for mounts vs. without mounts for every frame.
Frame Finishes And Materials
Frames made of wood add warmth and suit traditional, scandi and rustic interiors. Metal ones are lighter and suit contemporary or industrial style rooms. For finish pairings, we would suggest black frames against white or light grey walls, wood against neutral and warm-toned rooms; gold frames suit maximalist, art deco or eclectic interiors.
Wall-Hanging Vs Freestanding Framing
Frames that are mounted to the wall especially suit larger prints (A4 and everything above) that are meant to be a focal point, for example above a fireplace or sofa, along a hallway, or as part of gallery wall. Freestanding frames are better for areas where flexibility matters for example desks, shelves, bedside tables and mantelpieces. Many of our frames come with a back stand and wall-hanging fixings, making them a versatile option
How To Hang A Frame And Create A Gallery Wall
Most frames come with hooks on the back which can hang from a single nail. For heavier frames, it’s advisable to use a proper picture hook rather than a standard nail. Mark the wall lightly with a pencil before hammering; measure from the top of the frame to the hanging point on the back so the nail goes in exactly the right place. For two hanging points, use a spirit level or a level app on your phone to keep them even. On plasterboard walls, always try to hit a stud or use a wall anchor designed for plasterboards so that the frame feels more secure and won’t pull away over time. If you want to avoid hammering or drilling, use adhesive picture strips (such as Command strips) which work well for lighter frames up to around 2-3kg; check the weight rating on the pack before using. As a general rule of thumb, hang frames so the centre of the image sits at eye level and feels naturally comfortable to look at.
To create a gallery wall, start with one larger single frame in the centre and build outward with smaller frames. Stay consistent with the finish (e.g. all black or all wood) to avoid a chaotic look. Mixing portraits and landscape orientations adds visual interest. To avoid unnecessary holes, lay the arrangement out on the floor first before committing to the wall.
Photo Frames As A Gift
Photo frames are one of the most reliably well-received gifts for new babies, weddings, anniversaries, mother’s & father’s day and housewarmings. Multi photo frames make a particularly strong gift as they invite the recipient to curate their own display. Pair a photo album with flowers - a great way to preserve meaningful memories and moments too. Looking for something to fill the picture frame gift with other than a photo?
